- help to maintain the cleanliness on the sidelines
- be a role model; observe "HOW TO YELL":
Yell after the play is over. Yelling at an attacking player,
"Beat him!, Beat him!" or screaming at a defender, "Get her!, Get
her!" does several things. It panics the player, divides the player's
attention and prevents the player from making his/her own decision. In
addition, your advice might be wrong or contrary to what the player has been
taught.
So instead of yelling before the play, yell after. After the
attacker beats the defender, yell "Great move!" After the
defender wins the ball, yell, "Great tackle!" And if neither of
these things happen yell, "Great effort!"
Each possession permits many options. Some are better than
others, but several are acceptable. Pros don't always make the right
choices, so don't expect it form our youngsters. Instead, praise the
decisions they do make -- on their own! -- and when they try to do the
right thing but it doesn't work, yell, "Good idea!"
Don't over-position players. We've all heard the yell as if
players were chess pieces, to be arranged form afar: "Lisa, over to
the right. More. More, There! Susi, back five yards and
left. No another two yards. There!" This paralyzes young
players, and makes them timid. They're afraid that if they move, they'll
get yelled at. Of course they must pay attention to positions -- somewhat
-- but work is done during the training session. Don't badger them all
game long.
Yell only positive things. A player misses and trap and you
yell, "Trap the ball!" The player is aware of making a
mistake. Instead, yell "Good try!" or "Unlucky!"
The yelling option that might be most helpful is one many of us seldom
think of:
~ NOT YELLING AT ALL ~
